CONGRATULATIONS!
By beginning your research, you have already taken the first big step to homeownership. Not only will you no longer have a landlord, but you will be able to take advantage of the tax incentives our country provides to intice individuals to own their own homes - and therein save money each month (via principal payments, which build equity) and position yourself to cash in on market value gains down the road.
UPDATE 2: On November 6, 2009 President Obama singed into law an extension of the 2009 Tax Credit, and expanded it to "move-up" buyers as well who have lived in their home as their primary residence 5 of the last 8 years. There are a few changes to the previous credit as well for first-time buyers as well. Most importantly, Buyers must be in contract by April 30, 2010 and have until June 30, 2010 to close and fund the transaction. As part of the agreement to pass this through Congress, the National Association of REALTORS has agreed to not appeal to Congress for another extension, so THIS IS IT!! If you qualify, take advantage of this credit NOW!

UPDATE: As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 signed by President Obama on Feb 17, first-time homebuyers are being offered a tax credit when they purchase a home and close between Jan 1 and Nov 30, 2009. This $8,000 tax credit is fully refundable! This is an incredible opportunity for first-time buyers that should be taken advantage of, if at all possible to put extra cash into your pocket!
